Women’s Shoe Heels & the Economy
Heels Head Lower, Is the Economy Heading Higher? Did you read the article on CNN.com about women’s heel heights and what they may forecast for the economy? According to the article, research suggests that typically, women’s heels stay high during a downturn…
Here’s the skinny (some narrow shoe fun with a pun!)
In the 1920s, low-heeled flapper shoes gave way to high-heel pumps and platforms during the Great Depression.
In the 1970s oil crisis, platforms came back en vogue as the low-heeled sandals of the late 1960s were cast aside.
In the 1990s, the low, thick heels of the “grunge” period were replaced by “Sex and the City”-inspired stilettos just as the dot-com bubble burst.
This may not be the case, though, during this one, according to the article.
“Usually, in an economic downturn, heels go up and stay up — as consumers turn to a more flamboyant fashions as a means of fantasy and escape,” says Trevor Davis, a consumer product expert with International Business Machines’ Global Business Services unit, in a press release. IBM conducted a study of social media posts and is predicting that women’s heel heights, which are currently in nosebleed territory, are poised to come back down to Earth.”, writes CNN.com news editor Christina Cheddar Berk.
“This time, something different is happening — perhaps a mood of long-term austerity is evolving among consumers sparking a desire to reduce ostentation in everyday settings,” Davis says.
At The Narrow Shoe.com, we were certainly aware of the shift in the amount of elegant flats that are available in our narrow shoe width, as the Fall/Winter 2011 shoes started to appear. We’ve decided these are some of our 2011 favorites:

This pointed toed flat, available in beige or black, offers a lovely silhouette. Sesto Meucci has a well known reputation for b
oth fit and comfort! It would look great going from the office to a night on the town when worn with nice slacks or a skirt.
Still on trend for the Fall/Winter 2011-2012 season, animal prints are a plenty. While they’re a bit wild, you’ll still feel refined in these sweet ballet flats from Donald J. Pliner. Crafted in Italy, this narrow ballet flat has a haircalf upper with complementing topline and lace-up detailing on the counter. A bow adds some whimsy. Won’t you look fierce in these trendy animal print ballet flats?! They’re just purrrfect for the woman who wants a narrow ballet flat!

You can go from the office to a night on the town or even a holiday party with these lovely Stuart Weitzman flats. Available in several colors including animal print, they’d look great with a cute dress, skirt or nice pants!
Narrow Feet Love Mary Janes!
![]()
When a girl’s got a narrow foot, Mary Janes can be her best friend! It’s all in the strap — straps are a must have to hold that narrow foot in place! We typically associate Mary Janes’ with little girls, with their traditional rounded toe box and very flat heel.

The Mary Jane has grown-up, however, and for the last two seasons has been looking quite sophisticated and stylish! Women’s Mary Janes have pointed toes, platforms and flat, low, medium, high and even sky-high heels varying from skinny stilettos to chunkier stacked heels. Yet, just like the Mary Janes you may have worn as a child, the grown up version has one or two straps across the middle of the top part of the foot. Now for a little shoe history!
Ever wondered how Mary Janes got their name? Well, back in 1904 an executive from the Brown Shoe Company met the creator of a much loved comic strip called Buster Brown.
He purchased the rights to the name from him. Though many
people mistakenly think the company was named after the character, that’s just a coincidence, as the brand was created 25 years after that fateful meeting. While in the comic strip Buster is wearing the iconic shoe, the name was based on Buster’s sister, Mary Jane who can also be seen wearing it, as well.
The company made marketing history when they hired a series of actors, dressed them up as the comic book characters and took them on the road, selling the Buster Brown brand as they performed in theaters, department stores and shoe stores. How’s that for a “walk down memory lane?”
